They are a little bit more of a challenge, because they are regarded as nocturnal predators. Meaning, they feed at night mostly on live bait. Perch, goldfish and shad are some of the best baits to use when going after Flatheads. Limb and trotling are the more traditional methods, but pole fishing has been making an upward climb as of late.
Every catfishermen wants one of those trophy Flatheads. Flatheads are also know to reside in hard to reach places, such as in logjams, or a body of water that isn't easily accessed. They are also very territorial, meaning they like to stay mostly in one spot, but are known to travel up to a mile at night when feeding. Your best bet at catching one of the brutes is to find a logjam or some type of obstruction, and wait until the evening and nighttime hours to go after one of these fish.
Blue Cat or aka the White Cat is the most heavily commercially fished of the catfish species in the United States. They are loved by fishermen because of their size, raw power, and active feeding habits. It is not uncommon for them to feed three or four times a day, and another two or three times a night. They prefer deep water as opposed to shallow, and running water is usually a plus. The most popular baits for Blue Cats are shad, cutbaits and perch. Notably the most preferred bait is taking a shad and cutting it into "chunks". The scent from the opened and bleeding shad attract Blue Cats quite well. They usually are caught in deep water in the daytime. At night they can be caught just about anywhere, but shallow water with cut shad, or a live bait will usually yield you results. It is not uncommon for Blue Cats to get to over eighty pounds in weight. The record set last year was over 120 pounds.
Bullheads are another type of catfish in North America. They are mainly fished because of their tasty meat. They can be caught in almost any type of farm pond. A popular bait for Bullheads are nightcrawlers. Usually when you catch one Bullhead, chances are you will catch more there. You can regularly catch them in the late afternoon hours. On an overcast day with worms, will usually get you good results, depending on whether the location you are at has Bullheads.

Notably the most preferred bait is taking a shad and cutting it into "chunks". The scent from the opened and bleeding shad attract Blue Cats quite well. They usually are caught in deep water in the daytime. At night they can be caught just about anywhere, but shallow water with cut shad, or a live bait will usually yield you results. It is not uncommon for Blue Cats to get to over eighty pounds in weight. The record set last year was over 120 pounds.
Bullheads are another type of catfish in North America. They are mainly fished because of their tasty meat. They can be caught in almost any type of farm pond. A popular bait for Bullheads are nightcrawlers. Usually when you catch one Bullhead, chances are you will catch more there. You can regularly catch them in the late afternoon hours. On an overcast day with worms, will usually get you good results, depending on whether the location you are at has Bullheads.

Consider the subject of each email as a headline. If it's not interesting enough to be opened you will probably lose your fish.
Keep your (head)line tight. Short and sweet, and usually presenting a benefit - a darn good reason to open the email.
If you don't keep the line tight he will throw the hook - and throw your email in the trash.
Some fish fight harder than others. Many potential customers are quite defensive. Why should they trust you? They don't even know you. To earn their trust, and to have the best chance of landing your fish, use high quality line - VALUE.

This year we had the pleasure of fishing for sea trout, trout and Salmon in callander in Scotland on the river Teith.
The water quality and clarity is excellent, the area beside the car park in callander town centre provides excellent wading. The wading is easy going, with a smooth sandy bottom to the river.
Fly Fishing
Brown Trout Fishing
All though most angles visit this river for it's runs of salmon and sea trout the growing brown trout population is often overlooked. We had a number of small brown trout on the dry fly and one or two on small nympths.
Equipment
9ft 6-7 Fly Rod on Dry fly Line
Sea Trout
This perhaps my favourite type of fishing, in the dark, up to your waste in water. We found that on this water you need a decent downpour of rain to get any kind of run of sea trout.
The pools, at the meetings and just at the bridge is where we found most of our action, casting our fly just below the tree's on the far bank. We lost (I know terrible but it happens to us all) two or three decent fish and landed one 4lb fresh run sea trout.
Equipment
We were using 10ft 8wt single hander Airflow sls fly rods, these provided excellent casting and bite detection
Salmon
We had little luck on the fly with the salmon but did not anglers with two handed fly rods and heavy brass tube flies seamed to have more luck. In desperation we switched to spinning tactics using Flying C's we landed two 10lb salmon that were rather coloured.
Upon speaking to the Balif we discovered that this is the norm for this venue. However it was good sport.

10ft Spinning rod, Braid Line and Flying C's
Our Opinion
The venue is relatively cheap for salmon fishing, everyone is happy to help the more novice angler. Wading is easy and safe. Good choice of sport from trout fishing to salmon fishing. We would give this venue 4/5

Many fly rodders flock to the Florida Keys each year for the annual Tarpon migration. Depending on the temperatures, tarpon can start showing up in the lower Keys as early as February and tarpon fishing will last well into the summer months. For a fly fisherman the first few seconds of a tarpon hookup is the most exhilarating. The hook set on one of these prehistoric silver monsters has to be strong and often you will strike two to three times to get the hook in the tarpon's cinder block mouth. Once he's hooked you will know it and most likely he'll take you on the ride of your life. Don't be disappointed if after a few jumps he gets off, that's tarpon fishing and it should be enjoyed for what it is... a great display of gamefishing.
Other fly fishing target species here in the Florida Keys include the bonefish and the elusive permit. Permit are considered the ultimate gamefish taken on fly tackle. Some purists will even venture to say it has been the pinnacle of their saltwater fly fishing. Permit are nervous all the time. In my opinion they are a deep water fish who just do time on the flats to get food. A bandit of bait. They feed on blue crabs about the size of a silver dollar and shrimp. Therefore fly fisherman tie up many forms of crab patterns including the classic Merkin crab fly. This pattern in its many shapes and forms works best for fly fishing for permit here in the Keys.
Some of the largest bonefish in the world live here in the Florida Keys. Large bonefish cruise the flats from Biscayne Bay down to the Marquesas Keys west of Key West. The most concintration of large bonefish is in Islamorada. Many think this is because Islamorada hosts so many release bonefish tournaments and these fish are relocated after they are released at the tournament weigh station to grow up in "downtown Islamorada" as many of the guides call it. Bonefish in the Keys range from 4lbs. to over 10lbs. and are not easy to catch on fly but it can be done.
Advice to the Florida Keys visiting flyrodder, practice your casting as often as you can. Many visitors come to the Keys to try fly fishing for the very first time. It is a great way to either fall in love with the sport or become completely frustrated. There are casting clinics held at various fly shops in the Keys and Sandy Moret holds a fly fishing school a few times a year.

Fishing is becoming so popular that the demand often exceeds the capabilities of Alberta streams and lakes to produce adequate numbers of fish. Mortality must be kept low to in order to maintain and recover fish populations, the release of fish is an important tool to allow anglers to enjoy their sport, yet minimize the impact on fish populations. As an avid fly fisherman, and the father of two very enthusiastic teenage fisherman, I believe all fisherman should follow catch and release practices, to help relieve the angling pressures, and to ensure the success in this ever growing popular sport. All across Alberta, fish stocks have been managed by size limits and possession limits in order to help prevent the exhaustion of our fisheries. Without limits, our rivers and lakes would be not nearly as productive as they are today, and with the help of Alberta Fish and Wildlife Association, and the individual fishermen, together we can insure a bountiful stock for future generations to come.
There are a few simple rules to follow if you would like to be a successful Catch and Release fisherman, the number one rule is the use of barbless hooks. A single point barbless hook, although they make it easier for the fish to get away, they cause less damage and are easier to remove especially if the fish is hooked in a sensitive area as the eye, gills or deep in it's throat. To increase your chance of landing a fish using barbless hooks, they should be kept razor sharp at all times.
Play your fish quickly so that after you have landed it, the fish will have enough reserve energy to recover. The use of a good Catch and Release net will help to increase the chances the fish has to survive, and try to keep the fish in the water while you remove the hook. This will both minimize contact with the fish, and provide it with valuable oxygen that may have been depleted. If you must handle the fish, wet your hands first and try not to squeeze it, a good way to hold the fish is upside down as this will temporarily immobilize it. Never use your fingers to remove hooks always use forceps or pliers to gently remove hooks.
After the battle of getting your fish into your net and the stress of removing the hook, a fish may need some help to recover before it is released. When releasing a fish, try to release it in slow water with the head facing towards the current so that it can regain its strength and equilibrium, this will also help in forcing water through the gills helping to supply fresh oxygen. Never release an exhausted fish until the gills are working normally and the fish gains enough strength to swim away.
As an angler I always limit my catch, and if every angler would play a part in some level of Catch and Release, it would help to ensure a productive fishery for future generations to enjoy.
