Bass Fishing - America's Outdoor Sport

Since its inception in the late 1800s, bass fishing has been an exciting sport that captured the attention of many anglers. In the early part of the 19th century, sport anglers in the United states mostly confined themselves to trout and salmon fishing with fly rods. Bass fishing was mostly done for sustenance at that time, using poles and live bait. Because of this, bass fishing in the United States evolved almost entirely without influence from Europe?s sport fishing tradition.

The working class history of bass fishing shows in the traditional baitcasting reel that is the most popular among bass anglers. These reels store line on a revolving spool, reeling it back up via a handle, usually mounted on the right hand side of the reel. Bait casting reels allow for more delicate placement of bait and lures, but traditionally require more finesse to use because of the danger of overspinning the reel and tangling the line. These reels are also capable of using a heavier line than spinning reels.

While the mention of bass fishing may give you visions of cartons of squirming night crawlers, most bass anglers now use artificial bait. Common artificial baits include buzzbaits (an artificial bait with propeller type blades that churn the water on retrieval), spinner baits (baits similar in shape to an open safety pin with a hook) and plastic or rubber representations of live bait. In the latter case, particular colors may work best on any given day. These artificial baits have the advantage of not needing to be kept alive, or purchased just before a fishing trip. Artificial baits also come in a wide variety of colors to make them more appealing to fish and more difficult to lose.

Beginning bass anglers are recommended to start out in small ponds. These smaller fishing grounds will tend to contain smaller fish, but are excellent practice grounds before moving on to larger lakes. Wherever you fish, you will find that bass love to play hide and seek. They are often found lurking near structures and obstacles in the water, such as boat docks. If these are not available, places where water and plants change, such as the transition between rocky pond bottom and sand, or the transition between types of pond weed, can be good places to look for bass. Time, practice, and luck will land you your perfect bass. Once you hook your first quality bass, you too will catch bass fever.

Ultra Light Fishing Tips

Are you even aware of what ultra light fishing is? Many anglers seem to think it's using fishing gear that's small enough for landing minnows, but this simply isn't the case. In my view, ultra light fishing is actually closer to what we describe as regular fishing. Foe example I was watching the FLW tour on television the other day and some joker caught a 1 ? pound largemouth bass on eight pound test, and the announcer kept commenting on how that line was to light for bass fishing. In reality, the angler was simply ultra light fishing for largemouth bass. He was using gear that was matched to what he was fishing for. This type of thing is seen as taboo among most bass anglers who consider ten pound test to be "light line". Do you realize that ten pound test will hold ten pounds of weight before breaking? That's what ten pound test means.

The bottom line is that to me ultra light fishing actually means using line and lures that are matched to what you're fishing for without going into the range of overkill. Whatever the definition of ultralight fishing is, there are some tips that can help you.

The weight of your line - As mentioned earlier, you want the pound test of your fishing line to match the size of fish that you're trying to catch. For example, when I fish for trout in my favorite river, the biggest trout I would ever encounter would be six pounds (and that would be a once in a lifetime giant). Therefore I use four pound test monofilament. This diameter line is more than enough to land the fish I will catch, even big ones. I've caught five pond trout on four pound test many times.

The size of your bait - This is where ultralight fishing is different. Because you use line matched to you're fish, this them enables the angler to use lures and bait that are smaller. While these lures are smaller than most people are accustomed to, ultra light lures are actually the size of the prey the fish are used to. This fact is a big advantage for the angler.

The size of your gear - Again, this is where ultra light fishing seems different, because the rods and reels that are used are much smaller than many anglers are accustomed to. And again, I think the size of ultra light gear is much more in line with the type of fish that are being fished for. For example I use a five foot ultra light rod for most of my small river and stream fishing. When the water's really high, I'll use a six foot six inch ultralight rod for added sensitivity. My fishing reel remains the same. I land fish that are quite large (in the 5-6 pound class) with gear this size and people think I'm nuts. To me it's much more sportsmanlike to use fishing gear this size for fish in this size range. Obviously if I'm Steelhead fishing, I upgrade my gear to something heavier, because the fish that are caught are so much bigger.

In my opinion, the bottom line is that ultra light fishing is the most effective way to catch fish. Especially in Small River and stream situations. Ultralight gear and baits are all I use in such situations (unless of course Steelhead are the goal.) Many anglers think that large fish can't be landed on ultra light gear, but this simply isn't true. And I've said in this article, I catch large fish all the time. The other great thing about ultra light fishing is that you become a better angler. Ultralight gear forces you to play your catch, the way God intended, rather than just winching the poor fish out of the water. Remember, fishing is supposed to be a "sport", not a job.

Repeat the steps when the lure settles down on the bottom. Back bouncing is effective in deeper water like fishing in a boat.

* Drift-fishing: This is an easy way of fishing in which you cast upstream or downstream. This may vary depending on the current's amount. You should count the appropriate depth and start reeling.

3) How to fish from a boat: The most important factor in fishing from boat is the location from which you would carry out your fishing. You need heavier jig heads in deep water fishing as compared to the on shore fishing.

* With heavy weight which keeps your bait near the bottom of the water and the line straight down from your boat, you are able to drift the boat along with any current. A good technique of fishing on boats is trolling slowly with a fishing device called bottom-walker.

Fishing For Peacock Bass in the Amazon

These are some of the things we saw and did while fishing for peacock bass on the Nanay River. I wish I could show you the pink river dolphins, the strangler fig, the red spotted green discus, the big fish that got away.

We began our adventure expedition in the riverboat, Dawn on the Amazon, at the confluence of the Nanay and the Amazon River, departing Iquitos, Peru, at first light.

We motored upstream past Padre Cocha, home of the wonderful Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm we had visited the day before. Past Santo Tomas, the Iquitos waterworks, Llanchama, the Allpahuayo-Mishana Reserve, and eventually the village of Santa Maria, last outpost of civilization.

In Santa Maria the electrical generator is turned on at 7:00 p.m. and turned off at 10:00 p.m. The beer is always skunked. Very few people live in the jungle upstream of Santa Maria.

As we fished our way upstream it was as if we were going back in time to a way of life that disappeared in most of the world over one hundred years ago. We were sport fishing, everyone else was survival fishing. Four days and three hundred kilometers later we realized we were sport fishing for survival, living on what we caught.

To do it like a native, we would have had a fire platform on a sand base and cooked yucca and fish over a charcoal fire. We used a Coleman stove and supplemented yucca with rice and potatoes and ripe, juicy, tropical fruit. With a glass or two of wine from Chile.

Over the course of time, as the Nanay River meandered through the rainforest for thousands of years, many of the ox-bow bends were cut from the original stream bed by the annual floods. These natural banana shaped lakes are called cochas. It is in the black tannic acid water of the cochas, that we sought the holy grail of sport fishing, the peacock bass.

In a lifetime of fishing, only a few days stand out from all the rest as distinctly memorable. One of those days occurred on this voyage. I only caught three peacock bass that day, but fought several big, fierce, toothy fazaco for hours.

I caught five of the largest fazaco I have ever caught on six consecutive casts during part of the feeding frenzy. I was exhausted. The fishing was so great we decided to stay and fish that cocha again the next day and never got a bite.

Our catch for the trip was 140 peacock bass, but we lost count of the fazaco, black piranha, pike cichlid, acarahuasu, and other species. I am guessing they totaled two or three times the number of peacocks.

The most productive lures were spinner baits, in line spinners, and Excalibur's Pop'n-Image, in that order. We fished the Pop'n Image hard in two colors. The blue shade caught fish, the green shade never caught one.

As always the peacock bass relates to cover. Find submerged timber in the shade, and make several casts around it. Spinner baits are good to search the thick cover with because they do not get hung up very often and can be fished faster than many lures.

One way to catch peacock bass is to find where they are feeding. Listen for their distinctive splashing sounds and watch for them to follow your lure back to the canoe. Once you find fish, slow down, make more casts, try different lures.

Start out slow and quiet. If that does not work switch to a popper, chugger, rattle, or propeller bait. The native fishermen slap the water with their poles or paddles before they give up on a place. When in Rome, do as the Romans.

In my opinion, inch for inch and pound for pound, the peacock bass is the hardest fighting fresh water fish I have ever encountered. I also believe the peacock bass is one of the smartest and most difficult species of fish to catch, especially in the high-water months from November to May.

The World Top Water Fishing Champion

I was fishing a small lake in central California back in 1980, I think it was that year. I had been fishing for a couple of hours and doing ok, catching some 1-2 pound fish and in a far distance I could see this man walking up with a bright red jacket.

The closer he got, the more I noticed his jacket and all the patches on it, one said 1978 World Top Water Bass Fishing Champion, along with about 20 other patches. We began to talk, of course, I wanted to know all about him and he began to tell me about how he became champion.

Now, I do want to say one thing here, I forget what he told me and I don't even know for sure if there is such a tournament for the World Top Water Championship but I watched this guy fish. He was probably in his 50's or early 60's at the time and fished this lure different than I have seen before so I paid special attention. Finally, after seeing him catch a half dozen fish while I caught two I asked him what he was doing and what bait he was using that he was doing so well. He said he only used one kind of bait and opened up his tackle box. Can you imagine my surprise when the only lure he had in there was Rapalas. I mean bunches of Rapalas, every color and size you could imagine. I said where's the rest of your lures, he smiled and said this is all I use.

By the way, at the time I was fishing with a Rapala, that was ironic to me. I said "that is what I'm using now". He said "yeah, I see that but you're not fishing it right". Well, I had fished for bass for about 25 or so years then and wondered what in the world he was talking about, me not fishing it right. I had fished Rapalas for as long as I can remember. So, I said "what are you talking about not fishing it right?". He said "Well, all you're doing is throwing the lure in and reeling it back. I said "yeah". He said" have you ever noticed a minnow or shad or whatever, he said they never go very far, they usually move a few inches at a time and they dart." He said "that lure of yours is supposed to imitate the baitfish the bass is after so make it act like one." Then he showed me and guess what? He was right! His acted just like a baitfish and even looked like one swimming the way he did it. As he stood there twitching the end of his rod and letting it sit every two or three twitches then twitch it two or three times more and let it sit, I seen his point. I also seen him catch another bass, which made me a believer.

Now I don't know if this man was the top water champion or not but I do know one thing.........his technique works. I have used it on most of my retrieves anytime I fish top water and it works. Cast the lure, let it sit, twitch the end of your rod two or three times and let it set again. The only thing I have done is add one additional move. I throw the lure out and let it sit, twitch the rod two or three times and let it sit and then I move the lure so slow it barely cause a ripple and that is when I get most of my hits.

Try this techniques the next time you fish your favorite top water lure and see the results.

Don't Forget Your Camera On Your Next Fishing Trip

Here's a little scenario for you: You're out fishing with your buddy when he hooks into a trophy. It's a BIG fish and after a long fight, the two of you finally land the monster. You're both incredibly excited and very happy to have witnessed such an epic moment. Then you realize that you forget your camera, and of course, your friend doesn't have one either. There are going to be no pictures of the monster on this day. This scenario sucks, I've been through it. You're left with nothing but a great fish story. This is of course assuming that you fish like me, and release fish after you catch them.

If you are a catch and release angler, a camera is a pretty important thing. Technology has made it that much easier for all of us to have a quality camera with us at all times. And no I'm not talking about you camera phone. Those cameras aren't worth the price of admission. I am talking about digital cameras though. Digital cameras have become very affordable and the quality picture they produce is quite amazing. Digital cameras have become small enough that they can fit in most pockets on a fishing vest as well. If you do decide to go with a digital camera, either buy a water resistant one or make sure you store it in a Ziploc bag. We don't want your camera getting ruined if you have an accident.

Another option, which I've used in the past, is to carry a disposable camera with you. I used to carry a waterproof disposable camera in my fishing vest that is before I got my digital camera. The disposable camera worked fine and is still a viable and less expensive option. The only issue that I ever had with my disposable waterproof camera is that it was quite bulky. It almost took up an entire pocket in my fishing vest by itself. The digital camera I have now is very small and I don't even realize it's there.

The bottom line is that you remember your camera on your next fishing trip. Especially if you're a catch and release angler, as I am. It makes no difference whether you have a digital or disposable camera, just don't forget the camera. You never know when you might run into something on the water that you'd like to capture. I've seen sun rises and sunsets that bring a tear to my eye, and I'm glad IU had a camera with my to capture the essence of them.

Well I am back with my third article and it is exciting to see how many people are interested in the fun of fishing. These articles are meant for everyone. Some of the more experienced anglers probably know a lot about what I am talking about already but I think back to when I knew nothing about fishing. I wish there would have been something like that. Eventually this will be an eBook so take advantage of it while you can.

Take The Little Ones

If done right getting your kids started fishing at an early age could mean a lifetime of great memories or if done wrong it could turn them off of this great past time for ever. This is something that is going to be enjoyed by both of you so no matter what make sure you?re always having fun. When you go with the kids you want to make sure you do what the kids want. Most times a kid is going to want to fish with a float because it?s fun to see it go up and down when the fish bite. However if he wants to cast the biggest Len Thompson you have in your tackle box and your fishing for perch, that?s okay to because he is learning to cast and just maybe there is a big pike hanging out somewhere.

You have to make sure you pick the right spot to take your young child fishing. If your shore fishing then it would be neat if there were a park and a washroom close by the fishing spot. If they are going to roam make sure you can watch them. If you?re fishing out of a boat you?re going to want to fish close to the banks so you can get to the shore rather quickly to take regular stretch breaks and washroom breaks. Make sure you pack an interesting shore lunch and take time to ask the kids how they are enjoying their fishing trip. You do not want to be in the middle of the lake. I don?t care how good the fishing is because the kids don?t care either. They are going to get bored and if there?s nothing else to do they will want to go home.

Remember this trip is about the kids. So you want to help them as much as you can. Even though the fish are biting you want to focus on the kid?s experience. You can encourage them to put their own bait on the hook. Teach them to cast and reel. Something else to remember is don?t force your kids to go with you. That?s going to turn them off in a hurry. When you do take them make sure you keep the trip short. If their ready to go home then maybe that?s what should happen. Don?t ever get mad at them for making mistakes. Just because they end up with a birds nest doesn?t mean you should be getting angry. Remember this trip is about the kids so if you want to do some hard core fishing then maybe the kids should stay home this trip.

We have to make sure the kids are comfortable. You want to try and take them on a nice bright sunny day. We definitely don?t want kids relating fishing to cold miserable weather. Be sure to take extra clothes so you can layer them as the weather changes. Small things like bug spray and sun screen are going to be you most important accessories on this day. Make sure you have lots of treats and a good life jacket. If the weather turns bad do not force your child to fish in it. Cast and reel or maybe just jigging off the edge of the boat or dock is the best. You want to keep it simple for now. It?s not a good time to try and teach them to fly-fish or back troll.

At the beginning I would suggest fishing for pan fish. The kids are going to have a lot more fun catching 30, eight inch perch as opposed to one five pound pike. Your job is going to be to try and get them into a school of fish and size doesn?t matter. Perch and crappies can still hit very hard especially if you find a school of hungry ones. Remember to the kids every fish is a trophy no matter what the size. So what this is all getting at is that you want to make sure that the kids see that fishing is one of the funniest things you can do.

Atlantic Salmon Fishing

In the past, fishing for Atlantic salmons was mostly for sustenance. Caught on river runs or on the open sea, these salmons are fished by hundreds. In fact, a number of fishing techniques have evolved to catch these Atlantic salmons as they return to their spawning grounds en masse. Icelandic nomads cut holes on frozen lakes to fish for salmons beneath a layer of ice. Polar bears have learned how to dive and fish for salmons, often displaying superb agility and finesse underwater. Today, Atlantic salmon fishing is done mostly for sports; the centuries of fishing Atlantic salmon have extensively decimated populations. Several the commercial Atlantic salmon was bought away by concerned communities and sports institutions that are alarmed by the rapidly declining salmon specie. While it is still fished for sustenance, most commercial Atlantic salmons are now farmed, grown on fisheries or planted on unoccupied water sheds with sea access, where the salmons would still make their seasonal runs.

Atlantic Salmon fishing is still available for every anglers to enjoy; though some areas would require a strict ?catch and release? agenda. While you may not be particularly keen in releasing your catches, you can still measure and take photos with the catch before releasing it back into the water.
