We had thought that producing some matter on bass fishing would be an impossibility. However, once we started, there was no turning back.

Today's bass fishing Article
Ultra-Light Fishing Meets Ultra-Light Hiking

The image of a boy with his cane pole and a can of worms heading down a dirt path toward the "old fishing hole" has been burned into our minds by the likes of Norman Rockwell. That image, of the most basic of fishing tools, may warm our hearts but it is as far removed from the reality of fishing today as Neanderthal's spear is from a modern rocket launcher.

The keyword in modern fishing is specialization; the boy with the cane pole could catch all the sunfish and catfish he wanted, but his chances at a wild mountain Brookie or a Yellowstone Cutthroat were probably not that good. As a matter of fact, until recently to get at those remote fishing venues where you could find a Cutthroat or an Apache trout required a near expedition. Equipment, by modern standards, was heavy and bulky. To carry enough food, shelter, fishing gear, etc., required herculean efforts. An outdoorsman could hike, or he could fish. Doing both was problematic.

One of the biggest problems facing the hiker/fisherman was solved in the 1990s. A new class of hiking gear utilizing space-age polymers, ultra-light fabrics and metals and a new set of strategies for camping made long distance hiking a far more enjoyable experience than it had ever been. Using freeze-dried and dehydrated foods, tiny alcohol stoves, sil-nylon tents and internal frame packs the hiker could now roam far and free with a surpisingly light pack-load. Five to seven days in the wilderness can now be accomplished with under thirty-five pounds of equipment. Micro-filters treat water on the spot; new fabrics repel water and protect from weather extremes like those old wools and cottons never could. All these factors lead to the best of results: Extra space in your backpack!

What to do with that extra space? Once again it's technology to the rescue. For under 2 pounds the fisherman can now carry a variety of "Pack rods". Pack rods are usually made of graphite and appear at first to be impossibly thin and light. Don't let appearance fool you! Once assembled from their 4 to 6 component parts these pack rods are sturdy enough for most uses in the back country. Armed with open spin reels and 2 to 4 pound test line they open up a world of possibilities with very little space and weight impact.

Whatever your target, back-country etiquette should always be observed. Pack out what you pack in, practice leave no trace camping at all times. Also, when targeting wild (unstocked) trout it's best to catch and release at all times (and required by law in most places). Camp away from water sources and limit burning as much as possible. Tight lines!

We had started out on this mission of information on babel fish with lots of optimism. And we have also ended it in the same manner.

Today's babel fish Article
Salmon Fishing Equipment

Lures, graphite rods, and a dazzling array of flies, are you sure you?re having the best salmon fishing equipment? Salmons are a picky lot and making them bit is a tricky business. Having the appropriate lure for a certain condition is considered fair salmon fishing practice.

How about encountering a 50 pound King salmon with only an 8 foot light tackle? You?d be cursing your breath for that little oversight on your part. Even your wife will be cursing you to death; I would if I?m accompanying you.

So don?t ever bring curtailed equipment. Of course you can still battle that 50 pound salmon to submission with the 8 foot rod, and if you land the Chinook successfully you deserve the president patting your back. Heck, I would fly to your destination if you just let me know. But chances are, Joe, it would be a losing battle.

Are you heading for salmon fishing with the best equipment? Here?s a salmon fishing equipment checklist if you need one.

Remember, best doesn?t spell out as most expensive. It is a matter of a salmon fishing equipment doing as it should: fishing rods that don?t slip, lines that don?t break, and lures that even minnows are fooled.

Lures, Baits and Flies

Angling, when schematically done is mostly: locate game, prepare tackle, and fish. Using the appropriate lures always guarantees a bite. The only tricky part is brewing the right stuff. Cured salmon roe is considered by many to be the most irresistible treat but it comes with a price. They aren?t reusable of course. While flies can be a promising salmon fishing equipment, adding ?scents? can amplify its ?attractiveness? to the salmon.

Fishing Rods

Salmon fishing rods must have a mixture of characteristic: it must be flexible to handle the freaking aerial displays of silver salmon but and it must robust enough to handle the rock-like pull of a Chinook, all the while still fairly maneuverable to provide a decent jiggle. Of course you can bring several choices to meet several situations. Graphite steel provides the best flexibility while retaining some lightness and strength. Bamboo rods are also a popular choice and cheaper besides.

Reels

In the past, traditional reels are of simple construction. Its construct has no drag at all; anglers have to ?palm? the revolving rim to slow the rotation and the fish. New reel designs now allow ?drag? mechanism that would reduce line feeding in an event the fish decides to bolt away from the angler. Power assisted reels are often useful in landing heavier fish, or if the angler don?t have enough muscle strength to subdue a frenzied fish ?most especially useful on big game fish like the tuna or tarpon.

Lines

Using the appropriate line always dictate a successful catch. Think of landing a Chinook? These fishes are often coy in nipping bait and would bolt at the slightest provocation. Using a less visible line like the Canjun Advantage Line will make your game unable to smell you. Silvers are more voracious feeder, sometimes it doesn?t matter if you are using a stouter line.

Fishing In Southwest Florida 101

I am Captain Sean A Davis with Fish Warrior Charters and I want to give you, the reader some basic information and insight into the spectacular fishing opportunities available here in Southwest Florida.

The area that is Southwest Florida begins at its northern most point in Boca Grande runs south through Pine Island Sound, Captiva, Sanibel and Fort Myers Beach to Naples and ends its southern most point in the Ten Thousand Islands. The fishing opportunities discussed in this article are practical for most of this area. Although there are many opportunities for off shore adventures, I am focusing on near shore and backcountry fishing scenes.

Catching fish in Southwest Florida begins with catching bait. There are many species of baitfish available including scaled sardines, thread fin herring and pin fish just to name a few. These baits are usually caught with a cast net around area beaches, bridges or grass flats. If you are not proficient with a cast net, shrimp can be purchased from your local bait shop or marina. Shrimp can be great bait at times, but cast netting your own live bait will be much more beneficial.

As far as the fishing goes, there are many types of fish available in Southwest Florida. Snook, Redfish. Speckled trout, Tarpon, Mangrove Snapper, Sheephead and Permit are several species that are targeted in the pristine waters of Southwest Florida. The tactics to catch these fish vary depending on the seasons, tidal flow and weather. Trout are a great fish to target for beginner fishermen. With Florida?s vast grass flats and passes, hooking into trout can be a good bet all year long. The grass flats around Sanibel and Captiva can be very productive.

Redfish is another species caught regularly most of the year. They are not as subject to water temperatures as some of the other species. To catch Reds, you want to beat up the bushes. Fishing mangrove island shorelines at high tide is a highly effective way to catch these bruisers. Mangroves are found mostly in the Southwest Florida area.

Tarpon or ?Silver King?, as they are sometimes called, reign supreme in late spring and early summer beginning as early as April through the end of June. These beautiful game fish can be found cruising up the coast of Florida. It is an awesome sight to see schools of a hundred or more fishing rolling on the surface on there way to Boca Grande and points north. For these fish I use heavy spinning or conventional reels without the rods. My preferred bait is live Jumbo Threadfin Herring fished with a 6/0 circle hook. By pitching baits at rolling schools, hookups can come easy at times, but landing these spectacular fish is a whole other issue. The hookup to landing ratio of these Silver Kings in the 80lb or greater range is probably 7 to 1, but the show they put on when hooked will be burned in your memory forever. Tarpon fishing in Southwest Florida should be in everyone's "To Do list" once in their lives.

If I had to pick my favorite game fish of flats fishing it would be Snook. There is no other fish that I like to fish for more than these savvy hard pulling line-siders. The best months for Snook fishing are April through nearly November. During the summer months, Snook can found along the Beautiful beaches of Southwest Florida. Live bait is the key to catching these awesome game fish. Small Snook can be easily caught by almost anyone, but it is the giant Snook that haunt my dreams at night. I consider a big Snook at the small end to be 34" or 11 lbs going to 40" and over 20 lbs. These fish will test your patience, tackle and angling skills.

As you can see there are many angling opportunities her in the Southwest Florida area. All you need to do is come to Florida and witness it for yourself. Please remember, there are many regulations for keeping fish, so be sure to check local laws concerning seasons, sizes and bag limits. One of the best ways to learn first hand about tactics used to catch fish in Florida is to hire an experienced fishing guide. I have been guiding for years and would love to share some of my knowledge with you. Do not let life pass you by without fishing the flats and near shore coastal waters of Southwest Florida. Book your Fishing adventure today!!!

Experienced anglers with dimestore equipment can outfish the superbly equipped tyro every time--because they know how it's done.

With nearly fifty years of fly fishing to look back on, Tom McNally knows how it's done, from angling for tiny brook trout in mountain streams to fly casting for giant marlin in the open ocean--and everything in between. This book is the culmination of a long and respected career as one of the world's best-known outdoor writers--the collected knowledge of almost half a century of fly fishing condensed to fit between two covers. Here, in plain language, is a complete book of fly fishing from a complete fly fisherman.

The Rise: Streamside Observations on Trout, Flies And Fly Fishing

The Rise: Streamside Observations on Trout, Flies And Fly Fishing
Even after centuries of observation, anglers are still trying to solve the mysteries of that magical instant when a trout takes a fly. The Rise, based on recent scientific research into trout feeding behavior and the author's extraordinary photographic studies, provides many new clues. With unprecedented photographic clarity, Schullery reveals the subtleties of the trout's feeding behavior, analyzes the rise-forms that puzzle us, and offers startling and reassuring insights into the lessons of rejection. Schullery challenges modern "common knowledge"; reconsiders neglected flies, ideas, and tactics; and faces some of fly fishing's toughest questions with wit, patience, and the happy conviction that the questions are more important than the answers anyway. Distills five centuries' worth of angling lore and wisdom about trout feeding behavior and includes a photographic sequence that shows in detail how trout take a fly. A thorough examination of flies includes the importance of wings and what they are made of, hooks, soft-hackled flies, and skipping, dapping, and dry-fly techniques.

Rocky Mountains Fly Fishing: Attitude and Altitude

It is exotic fishing in Alberta's Rocky Mountains, where you can savour wide-open spaces, breath-taking scenery and utter solitude. Your attitude shifts with the altitude, bringing your appetite for fishing up a few pleasurable notches.

Crystal clear streams flow through valley bottoms. Unspoiled wilderness flanks the riverbanks. Big game is never far away. Soaring mountain peaks compete with bountiful fish for anglers' attention. And there's not another fisherman - or fisherwoman - for miles.

All these facets of fly fishing the Canadian Rocky Mountains Rockies ensure an unparalleled North American fishing experience.

Fishing licenses, which come in a variety of time frames, are both inexpensive and readily available.

Whether you're drawn to the great fishing in the meandering Upper Bow River, the solitude of remote streams around Crowsnest Pass or the unspoiled beauty of Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park, all are within a pleasant drive of the international gateway cities of Calgary and Edmonton.

Focus on Fishing in Spectacular Scenery

"It's stunning, the majesty of the Canadian Rockies," says Dan Bell, owner of Upper Bow Fly Fishing in Banff, which is in Banff National Park. "It's a pleasant distraction to focus on the fishing when you have so much spectacular scenery."

But a tug on the line will refocus even the most awestruck.

While catch-and-release has been the rule in Alberta's rivers and streams in recent years, the measure has dramatically increased the size of available fish.

The average size is 30 centimetres, but fish now get as big as 45 cms, though that's not as common, says Kim Straker, owner of Calgary-based Clearwater Adventures.

"The bull trout get pretty big and very aggressive," he says, adding that the solitude in the Rockies and the quality of fishing is what makes it so great.

"I've fished quite a bit in Montana and there's more pressure there," he says. "Here, you don't deal with the crowds. The fishing in many instances is just as good and the scenery is at least as beautiful, if not more so."

The streams and rivers in Alberta's Rockies are teeming with Westslope cutthroat, bull, rainbow, brown and brook trout as well as whitefish. Dolly Varden and splake can also be found in select lakes and rivers. The species vary on location but local guides will ensure each angler gets what he or she came for.

At the northern end of the Rockies, Barry Wood takes his clients fishing on Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park. Wood is owner and guide of Maligne Tours Limited. He takes his clients out on the lake when there's too much sediment in the rivers during the spring runoff.

No Crowds, Only Fish

"The fishing's unbelievable," he says. "There's no people and no crowds. My clients enjoy the beauty and serenity of the mountains. I get people who want to catch fish and others who don't even care."

Given the strong attraction of the environment, it seems like icing on the cake that the fishing is so good. Wood says that in five hours of fishing, he can catch as many as 40 fish.

"If you go fishing in Montana, it's wall-to-wall fishermen," he says.
"Here, you've got more diversity and the peaks are a lot more spectacular."

Straker knows what he's talking about. For instance, the highway between Jasper and Banff is off-limits to commercial traffic and the highway is maintained just for tourism. It is one of the most spectacular drives on the planet and it's a region to which Dan Bell also takes his clients.

In these rivers the fly-fishing is great, says Bell, whether it be streamer, nymphing or dry flying. He adds that while the Upper Bow is arguably the most beautiful stream in the world, other streams, like the Ram River, are quite isolated and beautiful and there are lots of big cutthroat and wild animals.

Between Jasper and Banff National Park are countless streams and rivers, all isolated and protected within national park boundaries. There are also great rainbow, cutthroat and bull trout in Kananaskis Country (which is less than an hour's drive from Calgary), and southeast of Banff National Park.

Alberta's Rockies run in one continuous spine from Jasper down to the Crowsnest Pass, near the U.S. border. Throughout the entire range, rivers and streams are plentiful and population sparse. The whole region is home to deer, waterfowl, ospreys, eagles, bears, moose, elk and a variety of other wildlife of all shapes and sizes.

Heading south, the Rockies look different than Jasper, but they remain just as wild and spectacular. Crowsnest Pass, located in the southernmost Rockies, is situated in a windy valley just before the mountain range crosses the border into the United States. It's home to the Crowsnest, Old Man, Livingstone and Castle Rivers.

Women Only Packages

While guides and guiding companies will help anglers find the solitude, scenery and fish they're looking for in the area's rivers and lakes, only the Angler's Ridge Bed & Breakfast offers women-only packages.

Wendy Meerveld, owner and operator of Angler's Ridge, along with a little help from partner companies Saddle Mountain Ridge and Tread Softly, teaches her female clients to fly-fish. At day's end, there's yoga, meditation and Reiki, a spiritual-healing exercise. There's also emphasis on healthy eating and wellness living.

"In three days the women reach total relaxation," says Meerveld. "We take someone from the city who's all hyped up and stressed and they go back utterly relaxed and wishing they could stay."

Though Meerveld and her two business partners have only offered the program for one year, she says there's been lots of positive feedback.

"Women think fishing is a man's sport, but they're catching on," she says. "When you're fly fishing, you have the river coming at you and its very tranquil."

But Angler's Ridge B&B isn't just for women. As the name would suggest, it's one of the few accommodations that caters specifically to anglers.

"I cater to the fly-fishermen," says Meerveld. "I pack them a lunch and if they want to rise at 5 a.m. then I make them breakfast at 5 a.m. We also give them tips because my husband and I are fly-fishermen. We know the areas really well, we tie flies and we can give them tips."

Incredible Fishing Stories

Incredible Fishing Stories
From a grueling 37-hour fight with a Pacific salmon to the maimed fisherman whose severed thumb turned up in the belly of a Mackinaw trout. From extraordinary marlin quests to hair-raising tales of "fish catches man," here are fishing's 80 most unpredictable and spectacular tales. To get them, Shaun Morey-a fanatical fisherman and inveterate story collector-traveled from Alaska to Australia, Mexico, and the Caribbean to interview anglers, boat captains, guides and witnesses; to dig up photographs, and to confirm each tale. You'll read about Captain Jimmy Lewis who, in a moment of sheer bravado (or insanity), speared by hand-and landed-a 1,600-pound hammerhead shark. Or Bob Smith, fulfilling his twenty-year quest to catch all forty species of North America's wild trout on the bitter cold morning after his eighty-first birthday. Or the 800-pound blue marlin that made a final lunge-ripping up the deck and dragging a chair, with Paul Clause strapped in it, to the bottom of the ocean. (Paul survived; so did the marlin.) Truth is stranger than fiction.

Artist Dave Hall provides clear illustrations of the different connections and fishing techniques. Instinctive Fly Fishing: A Guide's Guide to Better Fishing

Instinctive Fly Fishing: A Guide's Guide to Better Fishing

In fly fishing, as in life, the very simplest things are the most important, and the easiest to overlook. Streit, in this important new book, reveals what he has learned in more than twenty years of guiding fly fishing trips.

Streit has witnessed thousands of clients catch trout over the years, and their successes and failures often boiled down to a few elementary rules: keep the sun at your back, keep your silhouette off the water, keep your fly in productive water, think like a predator, and so on.

With an almost Zen-like scrutiny, Streit discusses his distilled techniques for fishing pressured trout. He looks into what separates the beginner from the expert caster, and dissects the mechanics of the perfect strike.

Other chapters include Streit's novel approaches to: drift-nymphs-dries-swing-bluegills and bobbers-reading water-riffles-eddy fishing-hiring a guide-fighting fish-wading-catch and release--maps

The result is a refreshing take on how simple this complex sport really is.

Bass Fishing At Night - An Effective Way To Fish

The classic image of bass fishing is lazing in a rowboat in the middle of a lake on a sunny afternoon. However, some smart bass enthusiasts have discovered that the best way to get great bass during the summertime months is by fishing in the dead of night. There are a lot of reasons why night fishing for bass is a great idea, so if you haven?t tried evening fishing yet, give it a shot and be prepared to reel in some winners. Summer is the most popular season for fishing, which has both positive and negative aspects for sportsmen. Because bait and equipment are in so much demand during the warmer months of the year, these goods are plentiful and easy to find as retailers stock up in order to get the best bait and tackle to their customers. However, as fishing fans flock to lakes and streams all over the country, all too often the peace and quiet of the sport becomes quite elusive as multiple sportsmen jockey for position on the same water. The summertime crowds can take away a lot of the fun of bass fishing. If you choose to fish at odd times of the night, it is likely that you will never run into the problem of overcrowding. Because only a small percentage of bass fishermen hit the water in the dark, you should have no trouble finding a pond or a lake offering plenty of solitude and a supply of fish that is all yours for the taking.

Another reason why bass fishing at night during the summer can prove to be a kind of fisherman?s jackpot has to do with the habits of the bass themselves. Bass prefer to stay cool, so they tend to head for the deepest waters that they can find during the intense heat of midday and afternoon. The deeper down in the pond the fish are lurking, the more difficult they are to catch and reel in. This can lead to fruitless afternoons of sitting in the sweltering heat and catching very little bass. However, during the cool nighttime hours, the bass come much more readily into shallow waters. This means that they are easier for sportsmen to find and to catch.

Although nighttime bass fishing can be much more rewarding than trying to snag these elusive creatures during the day, there are some disadvantages to night fishing. One problem that many sportsmen are surprised by during late night expeditions is insects. Be sure to pack some bug repellent to help you emerge from your night on the water without falling prey to mosquitoes and other warm weather pests. Another issue to consider is safety. Spending time in a boat when visibility is low because of the lack of light can be more dangerous than boating during the daytime, so make sure to take all of the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your fishing companions.

Fishing Tackle Guidelines

Fishing can be an extremely enjoyable and relaxing adventure. As long as you have the right tools, the fishing safety knowledge, and a little bit of support from friends or family, you could perform your fishing successfully.

However, the most overlooked factor in buying equipments is choosing the right fishing tackle. You should follow these simple guidelines in the selection of tackles.

1) You should choose the appropriate fishing flies that you would be using to catch the kind of fish you will be targeting to seize. The basic rule in choosing the kind of fly is to know which is abundant in that actual environment.

2) Once you have determined which fly to use, you should be able to choose the appropriate line to use. The three commonly used tackles are fly-fishing, plug casting and spinning. The difference between the three is that spinning and plug-casting makes use of bait as weight to drag the line from its reel to the target point of your fishing.

3) Fly lines come in four different types - weight-forward, double taper, shooting-taper and level taper. Within the four different types are numerous variations. However, once you have decided what kind of fishing wish to accomplish and what kind of fish you wish to catch, you will be using only a particular fishing line.

The fishing lines have numbers that rank from one to fifteen. However, the most common among anglers are the lines numbered from three to twelve in weight. As a basic rule for optimum catching, the first thirty feet of your line should be weighted and matched to the rod.

4) The next thing you should purchase is the rod and reel. The most suitable equipment for beginners is the spin-casting gears that is easy to operate and provides the least setbacks. For any kind of fishing, the recommended spin-casting reel is mounted on a light-action six-foot casting rod and spooled with an eight-pound test line. The reel and rod could be purchased as a package in many fishing stores. Most professional anglers prefer bait-casting and spinning tackle.

5) You would need sinkers, hooks and bobbers. Sinkers and hooks could be bought in different pack with different styles and sizes. When selecting bobbers, always keep in mind that the smaller the bobber, the better the performance. The struggling of the fish would depend on the size of your bobber.

6) Professional anglers prefer artificial lures. The recommended sizes of lures are 1/8 ounce up to ? ounce.

Remember that the kind of tackle would depend on the fish you prefer to catch. Avoid buying unnecessary fishing items and enjoy your affordable fishing experience.
